The
Fertility Evaluation
The
fertility workup for the female always includes a
thorough physical examination, review of gynecologic
and other medical records, including all past treatments
for infertility, discussion of previous tests, a family
medical history, and usually several standard diagnostic
tests. A semen analysis is also conducted on the male.
Many
times it is not necessary to repeat previously administered
tests unless there is doubt concerning their accuracy
or there have been significant medical changes. Tests
such as hormone levels are usually repeated as are
others that are subject to interpretation by our specialists.
There
is debate over the need to repeat laparoscopies and
we do not routinely recommend that our patients undergo
additional procedures. Our recommendation is dependent
upon the particular patient, her diagnosis, and the
expected outcome. Reproductive specialists are highly
trained in the use of the laparoscope and can often
perform delicate procedures such as reversal of tubal
ligation. However, in our experience patients have
better outcomes utilizing IVF.
