Egg
Donors and IVF

North
Shore Fertility works in conjunction with an agency
that recruits egg donors who want to help couples
realize their dreams of creating families. Some
women are unable to use their own eggs due to disease,
age, chemotherapy or radiation to treat cancer,
or eggs that will not fertilize and develop to maturity
for unexplained reasons.
All
egg donors must undergo careful screening including
a complete physical and medical history, genetic
analyses to uncover any inheritable diseases, a
drug screen, testing for AIDS and other sexually
transmitted diseases, and psychological evaluation.
Egg
donors undergo ovulation induction with follicle
stimulating hormone (FSH). FSH is administered by
subcutaneous injection daily according to patient
specific protocols. Medications such as Lupron or
Antagon are often used to prevent premature ovulation.
Egg
donors must come to our office several times during
their stimulation for ultrasound examination and
estradiol hormone measurements. Once the eggs are
mature, an injection of hCG is given and an egg
retrieval is scheduled for 36 hours later. Egg retrieval
is performed using ultrasound guided transvaginal
retrieval under mild sedation with minimal discomfort.
